England all-rounder Jacob Bethell has been sidelined for the possibility of playing in The Hundred 2026 after injuring a knee while on duty during the recently completed ODI series vs India. It is a disappointing blow for the young cricketer, who was set to be one of Birmingham Phoenix’s star players in the tournament. That will come as a major loss for the franchise, which had committed heavily to his all round capabilities in the new campaign.
While Bethell suffered the injury to his right knee while on international duty with England in the ODI series, medical assessments have since revealed that he hasn’t recovered sufficiently to feature in The Hundred. His rehabilitation will be managed by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), but all efforts will go to ensure he is fully fit before he plays competitive cricket again. There currently is no firm timetable for his return, and the medical team will watch him in the weeks to come.
Birmingham Phoenix have drafted in South Africa all-rounder Donovan Ferreira as captain after previous skipper Bethell was ruled out. With one of the side’s domestic stars suspended, Ferreira is also expected to add experience and leadership. This means that the franchise will have to recalibrate its plans in both batting and bowling.
The injury also creates question marks over Bethell’s availability for England’s next international assignments. The ECB has not closed the door on him returning for future series but it will be entirely dependent on how his rehabilitation progresses. Given his increasing value to England’s white-ball picture, it is no surprise the management will not take any further risks.
Bethell was on a great run of form before being sidelined through injury. During the One Day International (ODI) series against India, he demonstrated with both bat and ball why he’s already being hailed as one of England’s brightest young talents. It was only in August that Hetmyer withdrew from The Hundred for personal reasons, and it will be disappointing for the player and fans who were looking forward to seeing him play.
But as the tournament nears, Birmingham Phoenix must go on without one of their key players, with Bethell concentrating now on getting fit. Several more important internationals are due later in the season, and England will be hoping their gifted all-rounder is fit again soon.
